Only three miles north of Big Pine on the east side of the 395 Hwy is Klondike Lake. This small lake is a popular local spot for swimming, water-skiing, sailing and windsurfing. Glacier Lodge, nestled at 8,000 feet on Big Pine Creek, is a gateway to some of the best hiking and fishing in the country, as well as climbing and pack train services.

In and around Big Pine, there are a number of great areas for prime bouldering and/or climbing. There is no shortage of wilderness hiking trails and mountain biking loops. Cross country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts have access to some of the most spectacular winter landscapes in the world.

 

If you enjoy being on the road there are many attractions to see on paved roads or off road and horseback excursions.  A couple favorite motor adventures are the 12 mile drive through the Movie Flats in the Alabama Hills and the Manzanar National Historic Site. For indoor adventuring there is the Eastern California Museum, Laws Railroad Museum and many other local art galleries.

 

Photographers love the region’s natural beauties, wildlife, wildflowers in the spring and the changing of leaves in the fall. Bird watchers could spend the entire winter exploring different birding sites and never see all the species that populate or pass through the Owens Valley. Billy Lake, Tinemaha Reservoir and Fish Springs are favorite wildlife viewing locations.

 

If you need a good hot soak!, The unique geology of the Owens Valley created  many geothermal hot springs.  One of the most popular is Keough’s Hot Springs just 7 miles north from Big Pine.
